I Hate the Eagles During the Off Season
Who's more annoying than the Eagles during the off season? Seriously. I hate this team from March - September. It has been widely recognized that the NFL has become a 12 month sport. Training camp, preseason, regular season, post season, free agency, draft, training camp, preseason, etc. The Eagles have managed to have exactly one exciting off season that I can recall (2004 with T.O. and Kearse, we also resigned Trotter that year), and how did we fair that season? Oh yeah, we only went to the SUPER BOWL!!
So let's see, what other free agents have we signed over the years? Was anyone even remotely excited when we signed any of these players; Shawn Barber (twice)? James Trash? Carlos Emmons? Dhani Jones (to replace Emmons)? John Ritchie? Matt Schobel? Mike McMahon? Levon Kirkland? Dorsey Levens (five different times)? Nate Wayne? Blain Bishop? Diarrhea McCants? ND Kalu? Jeff Garcia (seriously, was anyone really excited when we signed him)? Its a joke.
Since Lurie/Banner/Ried era began I can think of 4 free agent signings that were actually exciting; John Runyan, T.O, Kearse and Darren Howard. I'm not counting Troy Vincent or Ricky Watters, they're pre-Ried. So that's four free agents since 1999.
Yeah, I know, we also traded for Donte Stallworth last year so that was exciting, but we're letting him walk this year, which begs the question - why the hell did they trade for the guy in the first place? Oh, and don't forget, as long as we're discussing off season trades, we also aquired Marc Simoneau in a trade, so that offsets the Stallworth signing.
I know, I know, Super Bowl's are not won in March and April, I'm well aware of that. Its just so annoying.
Why am I so annoyed by this today? Because I just read maybe the single most annoying and nauseating Eagles article in my life - "Eagles Sign Blazing Fast Johnson" (http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/articles/articlesNewsDetail.jsp?id=65559). BETHEL Freakin' JOHNSON!! Are you kidding me. That's our signing so far this year? We're going to let Donte Stallworth walk and sign Bethel Johnson? Did you look at his numbers? 39 receptions in a four year career. That's disgusting. Its down right Freddie Mitchellesque. He's a bum. A flat out bum. A guy who New Orleans cut last year after trading for him just weeks earlier. I know this free agency class sucks, I get it. I don't care if they only sign one player...just make that one player Donte Stallworth. But Bethel Johnson??!!?? GGRRRRRR!!!!
Did I mention that I hate this team during the off season?
